Stay in a Historic Texas Landmark
Relive the charm of the past at the Western 1924 Lofts, where century-old character meets modern luxury. Nestled in the heart of Martindale, these beautifully restored second-floor lofts sit within the historic Martindale Motor Company building, a proud Texas Registered Landmark and part of the U.S. Register of Historic Places.
When a building is marked as a Texas Historic Landmark, it is recognized for its historical and architectural significance. To receive this distinction, the building has to be at least 50 years old and deemed worthy of preservation under state law. This designation is the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. We are deeply honored to hold this distinction and are thrilled to share the magic of this historically significant landmark with those who choose to stay in our lofts.
How Western 1924 Lofts Began
Our story is one of resilience, restoration, and appreciation for history. Originally, this site was home to a lively mercantile store in the late 1800s. It was a hub for commerce in Martindale. However, in 1918, a devastating fire swept through the area and burned the original wooden structure to ashes.
The Martindale Motor Corporation built a new structure in 1924, a sturdy two-story masonry. This ushered a new era of business and over the decades, the building housed everything from a car dealership and service station to a Masonic Lodge, a post office, and even a boxing gym. Although, as time passed, the once bustling space fell into disrepair and was eventually deemed unsafe in 2017, facing possible demolition.
Determined to preserve this piece of Martindale’s history, Maury Domengeaux and Steve Schlossareck purchased the building in 2019 and completely restored and transformed it. Every detail was thoughtfully revived to honor the past while still breathing new life into the space. It was completed in 2023, now standing as a vibrant centerpiece in downtown Martindale.
Western 1924 Lofts is more than just a place to stay—it is a symbol of determination and a living testament to the town’s rich history. We offer guests a unique opportunity to experience a beautifully restored landmark, while still enjoying modern comforts and high-end amenities. We feel privileged to share this space with those who appreciate its story, craftsmanship, and charm.
