The History and Evolution of Outlet Malls
Outlet malls first appeared in the 1930s, when they were located near factories and sold discounted “seconds” or past-season styles at steep discounts. Over time, these shopping destinations transformed, moving closer to major cities and incorporating entertainment, coffee shops, and restaurants. Brands began designing products specifically for outlet stores, making them an important part of the retail industry. Traditional indoor malls have faced challenges recently, especially during the pandemic, but large open-air shopping centers—like San Marcos Premium Outlets— are seeing a strong comeback. Conveniently located off Interstate 35, this outlet destination cannot be missed.
