A Legacy Restored

1880s – 1923:

Originally, a wooden mercantile store was located on this site, serving as a hub for commerce in Martindale. Around 1918, along with the rest of the town, the building unfortunately burned down in a devastating fire set off by the cotton gin’s hydro-electric power plant. The structure was destroyed, along with much of the surrounding area.

1923-1924:

The Martindale Motor Corporation (MMC) constructed a new 2-story masonry building, marking a new era of industry and business in the town.

1920s-1930s:

The MMC building became a center for many different businesses:

  • Martindale Motor Corporation operated on the first floor, selling and servicing Hupmobile and Ford automobiles.
  • A mercantile and drug store also occupied the first floor.
  • The second floor housed the Martindale Masonic Lodge #1206.
  • Offices and living quarters for the local telephone company operators were located on the second floor.

1940s-1970s:

When the MMC closed its business due to the Great Depression, the building found a new life:

  • A Humble Oil gas service station replaced the first floor (which later became Esso, then Exxon), and operated through the 1970s.
  • Several apartments and meeting rooms were rented on the second floor.

1973:

MMC sold the building to Samuel Duran.

1947-1975:

A post office was established on the first floor, replacing the mercantile business that was previously there.

1975-2019:

Over the years, the building hosted many different occupants, such as a BBQ market, cabinet making business, and boxing gym. However, the building remained mostly vacant and fell into significant disrepair.

2017:

After an inspection by the City of Martindale, the building was deemed unsafe and dangerous. The roof and portions of the interior had collapsed. A portion of the foundation failed and the masonry walls were in danger of toppling. The building was red tagged and faced possible demolition.

2019:

In an effort to preserve this historical landpart, the building was purchased by Maury Domengeaux and Steve Schlossareck. A full-scale restoration started to bring the building back to its original condition.

2019-2023:

A meticulous renovation process transformed the building into a fully restored and revitalized space.

2023-Present:

The building renovation was completed in October 2023. The building now serves as a lively centerpiece of downtown Martindale, featuring:

  • Duett’s Texas Club on the 1st floor, a bar and live music venue.
  • Western 1924 Luxury Lofts, five beautifully designed short-term rental lofts on the 2nd floor.
