Crayton Cemetery – A Historic Landmark

John Crayton and the Spruill Family arrived in what became Martindale in 1839. Many of the graves date to the early 1800’s, including those of the extended Crayton Family and enslaved Cherokee and African Americans. Many of the enslaved people’s graves were unmarked until recently identified with Ground Penetrating LIDAR.

Crayton Cemetery – A Historic Landmark

Located near the San Marcos River off County Road 103, Crayton-Spruill Cemetery is a historic family burial ground that reflects Martindale’s rich past. Also known as John Crayton Cemetery, this 19th century cemetery is the final resting place of members of the Crayton and Spruill families, as well as other early settlers who shaped the region.

Established in 1871, the land for the cemetery was donated by John Crayton, an early Republic of Texas settler who arrived in 1839 from Marion County, Alabama.

A veteran of both the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, Crayton designated the land as a multi-racial cemetery, which was a significant and progressive act at the time. Among many notable individuals buried here are John Crayton and his wife, Mahalah Spruill Crayton. The cemetery reflects the rich history of the area and the diverse heritage of its early inhabitants.

Today, Crayton-Spruill Cemetery serves as a historical landmark, standing as a testament to the legacy of the Crayton and Spruill families. It honors the memory of Martindale’s early settlers and their contributions to the community’s history. It is a peaceful tribute to those who played a role in shaping Martindale’s community and culture.
